For much of the past decade, artificial intelligence occupied an uneasy position within the legal profession. Lawyers experimented with AI-powered summaries and research aids, but trust eroded sharply after several high-profile incidents in 2024 where attorneys cited fabricated case law generated by chatbots. The verdict from the profession was blunt: AI could assist lawyers, but it could not be trusted to think like one.
That consensus is now being challenged.
The release of Claude Opus 4.6 and the rapid adoption of so-called Agentic AI systems have triggered a renewed debate about whether autonomous AI agents can safely operate in professional legal environments. A recent TechCrunch report, “Maybe AI agents can be lawyers after all,” argues that the legal industry may have crossed a critical threshold, moving beyond chatbots toward coordinated, task-driven AI systems capable of real legal work.
The shift is not driven solely by larger language models, but by how they are deployed. Law firms experimenting with “agent swarms” assign multiple AI agents to discrete roles within a single legal workflow. One agent focuses exclusively on precedent research through databases such as Westlaw or LexisNexis, another drafts briefs or contracts, while a third, often called a compliance or verification agent, audits citations and flags potential hallucinations.
According to early internal tests cited in the report, these multi-agent systems have improved success rates on professional legal tasks by nearly 50% compared with earlier single-model tools. The compartmentalization mirrors traditional legal teams, reducing the risk that one AI failure cascades into an unusable final document.
The implications are already rippling through large law firms. Agentic AI tools are reportedly achieving accuracy rates above 90% in contract comparison, clause extraction, and citation checking, work historically assigned to junior associates as part of their early training.
Legal technology analysts warn this could upend the traditional pyramid structure of law firms, where high-volume, low-level work supports the development of senior talent. At the recent InsidePractice Legal AI conference, one panelist described the transition as moving “from AI as a search engine to AI as an executive assistant.”
For solo practitioners and mid-sized firms, however, the impact could be transformative. With agent swarms handling research and drafting, a single lawyer may soon wield capabilities once limited to firms with dozens of associates.
Despite the momentum, regulators and ethics experts are urging restraint. AI agents still lack the contextual judgment, moral reasoning, and emotional intelligence required for negotiations, witness examination, and courtroom advocacy. More concerning is the risk of “lawless agents, systems that might recommend unethical or illegal shortcuts to achieve client objectives.
In response, legal scholars are pushing for Law-Following AI (LFAI) standards, which would hard-code ethical and procedural constraints into autonomous legal systems and require documented human oversight for all filings and advice.
The economic pressure is difficult to ignore. Goldman Sachs estimates that roughly 44% of legal tasks could be automated in the coming years, primarily in research, drafting, and review functions. While few expect AI agents to replace lawyers outright, the competitive advantage of AI-augmented practice is becoming increasingly clear.
As the legal profession reconsiders its relationship with artificial intelligence, the emerging consensus is pragmatic rather than futuristic: AI will not replace the lawyer, but lawyers who effectively deploy AI agents may soon replace those who do not.
