Scroll through Instagram or Quora, and you’ll find everything from AI-generated images of a cosmic Hanuman glowing with digital energy to chatbots that let you “talk” to him. Some even whisper that an AI project called Hanooman has been banned in India. The truth, though, is more nuanced—and much more interesting.

Over the past two years, creators and devotees alike have been experimenting with Hanuman in digital form.

Chatbots such as MyHanuman.ai promise daily prayers, mythological Q&A, or simply a conversation with the deity.

Meanwhile, Hanooman AI Takes Shape

While “Hanuman AI” online has mostly meant devotional apps and art, Hanooman AI (with an extra “o”) is something very different.

Launched in 2024, Hanooman AI is part of the BharatGPT ecosystem spearheaded by IIT Bombay in collaboration with other IITs. Backed by SML India and 3AI Holding, it aims to build India’s answer to ChatGPT—one that speaks not just English but 98 global languages, including 12 Indian tongues from the very start.

Imagine an AI that can answer your queries in Hindi, Tamil, or Assamese with the same fluency as in English. That’s the promise of Hanooman. Available on web and Android, it’s already being tested in education, healthcare, and governance, bringing digital intelligence closer to everyday Indian users.

The Ban That Never Was

So, where did the rumor of a “ban” come from?

Back in March 2024, India’s IT Ministry issued an advisory asking companies to seek approval before deploying under-tested AI models. Headlines quickly spun this into speculation that certain platforms—including Hanooman—were restricted. But just two weeks later, on March 15, 2024, the advisory was revised. The requirement was dropped.

As of today, Hanooman AI has never been banned. It continues to be developed and promoted as India’s multilingual GenAI platform.

Opportunities and Challenges

Whether it’s Hanuman-inspired art or Hanooman’s language models, both raise fascinating possibilities.

For devotees, AI chatbots make prayers and stories accessible on a phone.
