If you thought AI-generated art was wild, get ready for the next chapter. Midjourney, the company that’s been dazzling the internet with surreal and stunning AI images, just dropped something big: its very first AI video generation model, V1. And yes, it’s as cool as it sounds.
With V1, anyone can turn a simple text prompt or a static image into a short, animated video. The clips are five seconds long by default, but you can stretch them out to a maximum of 21 seconds with a few extra clicks. It’s all happening on Midjourney’s Discord or web platform, and it’s available to paying subscribers starting at $10 a month.
So, how does it work? You type in what you want to see, or upload a picture, and V1 gets to work. The AI uses a custom-built diffusion transformer engine—think of it as a supercharged brain for video creativity. The result is a moving scene that feels surprisingly cinematic, with smooth camera moves and lively subjects. You can even tweak the motion and camera settings if you’re feeling hands-on.
Since launch, Midjourney’s Discord has exploded with experimental videos. People are making everything from futuristic city flyovers to trippy dream sequences and animated characters. The videos have a unique, artsy vibe—Midjourney’s signature style shines through, making each clip feel like a mini work of art.
But there are a few catches. Right now, you can only make landscape (16:9) videos, and there’s no sound yet. Plus, video generation eats up your monthly quota way faster than still images—about eight times faster. If you want to go all out, you’ll need to pony up for a higher-tier plan with unlimited relaxed mode.
Just before the launch, Midjourney found itself in hot water as Disney and Universal filed a lawsuit accusing the company of copyright infringement. This legal challenge highlights the growing pains AI creators face as they push boundaries, raising important questions about ownership and creativity in the age of machine-made art.
What’s Next for AI Video?
Despite the hurdles, Midjourney is already looking ahead. Plans for future updates include 3D video capabilities and more interactive, real-time environments. For now, V1 offers a tantalizing glimpse of how AI is democratizing video production, turning complex filmmaking into something anyone can try with just a few words.
In 2025, the line between imagination and reality is blurrier than ever, and Midjourney’s V1 is right at the center of that creative storm.
