Gemini Surges Past 1 Billion Monthly Users Worldwide

by Deepak Mehra - 6 hours ago - 4 min read

Google’s Gemini app has crossed one billion monthly active users, giving the company another billion-user product and marking one of the fastest consumer adoption runs in Google’s history. CEO Sundar Pichai announced the milestone as Gemini continues to close the gap with ChatGPT in the global AI assistant market.

The number is particularly striking because Gemini was at just over 400 million monthly active users in May 2025. By February 2026, it had reached 750 million, climbed past 900 million by Google I/O in May, and hit 950 million in late July. Crossing one billion means Gemini has added roughly 600 million monthly users in about 15 months, representing growth of around 150% from its May 2025 base.

Google had said in May that it already operated 13 products with more than one billion users, including Search, Gmail, Android, YouTube and Chrome. Gemini now effectively becomes the 14th member of that club, with reports describing it as Google's fastest-growing consumer product to reach the milestone.

Gemini’s growth is accelerating beyond simple app installs

The billion-user figure matters, but Google’s engagement data provides an even stronger signal. During Alphabet’s July earnings update, Pichai said Gemini’s daily active users had tripled over the previous year. At Google I/O in May, the company said daily requests to Gemini had increased more than sevenfold year over year.

Google has also expanded the app rapidly beyond the traditional chatbot format. Gemini now includes personalized experiences, multimodal interactions, image and video generation, connected Google services and more agent-like features such as Daily Brief and Gemini Spark. In May, Google said more than 900 million people across 230 countries and more than 70 languages were already using Gemini every month.

Its distribution advantage is difficult to ignore. Google controls Android, Chrome, Search, Gmail, Workspace and several other consumer platforms through which Gemini can be surfaced. The Verge reports that more than 100 million Gemini users are on iOS, meaning the majority of usage still comes from Google's much larger Android-centered ecosystem.

That ecosystem is about to become even more important as Gemini increasingly takes over tasks previously handled by Google Assistant.

Google’s wider AI footprint is even larger

Gemini’s one-billion-user milestone represents only one part of Google’s AI reach. At I/O 2026, Google said AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly users, while AI Mode in Search had already surpassed one billion monthly active users.

Google’s internal usage figures also show how quickly demand for AI processing has expanded. In May 2025, the company said it was processing more than 480 trillion tokens per month across its products and APIs, compared with 9.7 trillion a year earlier, nearly a 50-fold increase at the time.

The geographic spread of that usage is notable as well. A 2026 Google research project called AI & Economy ATLAS analyzed 15 million de-identified interactions across the Gemini app, Google AI Mode and Gemini API, covering more than 150 countries and 140 languages. The researchers found that English represented only around one-third of query volume, suggesting generative AI adoption is becoming increasingly global rather than remaining concentrated in English-speaking markets.

The ChatGPT-Gemini race now looks very different

Gemini’s rise also changes the competitive picture for consumer AI. ChatGPT reached the one-billion-monthly-user level earlier, but Gemini has now arrived at essentially the same scale. The Verge reports that both services have crossed the one-billion-user mark, turning what once looked like a heavily one-sided consumer chatbot market into a much closer battle.

There is still an important caveat: monthly active users do not tell us how intensively people use each service, how many are paying, or how much revenue each user generates. Google’s advantage is distribution through Android and its existing apps, while OpenAI built ChatGPT largely as a new standalone consumer destination.

For Google, however, crossing one billion monthly Gemini users is significant because it shows that generative AI has moved beyond experimentation inside the company. Gemini is becoming another mass-market Google product, sitting alongside services that reach a substantial portion of the global internet population.

The next phase of the competition will be less about who can claim the biggest headline user number and more about engagement, paid conversion, agent capabilities and how deeply AI becomes embedded into everyday computing. With Gemini adding its latest 50 million users in only a few weeks after Google reported 950 million in July, that race is moving faster than ever.
